He was educated at the Humphrey Davy Grammar School in Penzance where he won a scholarship to study English Literature at Magdalen College, Oxford through the Violet Vaughan Morgan national competition. He became a Professor after his degree, & taught both in the UK & in Europe. He went on to teach for the British Council in Africa, Canada & Japan. His interests were in film, music & architecture, & he travelled widely. He learned Japanese & particularly enjoyed walking in the mountains of Japan.
