This is a hand made rug, made by me, from the whole fleece of one of my pedigree Shetland sheep, a little ewe called Elf (pictured). This particular fleece is thick with beautiful long locks so makes a fabulous statement piece as well as a practical soft, cosy throw or rug. The great thing about felt backed fleece rugs is that, unlike a sheepskin rug, the sheep that grow these marvellous fleeces are still very much alive & enjoying life! Sheep need to be shorn every year, for welfare reasons as much as anything, & it's great to use the resulting fleeces to make something as gorgeous & sustainable as this lovely rug. Making one of these rugs takes much time & effort - lots & lots of water, soap & elbow grease, but the finished result makes it so worthwhile. Much of the preparation time is taken up with picking over the fleece, removing bits of hay, seeds & things that sheep seem to like collecting! Please be aware that there will still be a very small amount held in the fleece which can be picked out as it comes to the surface. Elf was shorn in May 2024, she's a pedigree Shetland in a colour traditionally called Moorit, which is a rich caramel brown to you & I! Elf's fleece is light blonde at the tips, darkening to a medium rich brown underneath. The rug measures 35 inches x 24 (90cm x 60cm), & is lovely & soft so could be perfect as a throw as well as a rug. All the proceeds from my Etsy shop goes back into caring for my little flock.
