Description
This piece reflects generations of ancestral creativity & indigenous design. The natural colour of the palm, black & vibrant orange compliment each other beautifully. The natural dyeing process means each piece is truly unique as they cannot be fully replicated due to the changing weather conditions which affects the tones of the colour. Inspiration is drawn from the natural world & the local livelihoods that it supports. The horizontal connecting lines form a chain, which represent fishing nets & shows how important it is to the local economy. These unique products were originally mats made by the Chimila, an indigenous group that used the estera palm, a palm native to the Caribbean coast of Colombia, & natural dyeing techniques to create beautiful mats by loom weaving. These ancient practices were passed down from mother to daughter & have evolved with each generation's creativity. They still use the palm as well as a variety of plant-based materials to colour the products, including seeds, leaves & tree bark, creating a gorgeous earthy feel. Depending on size, each wall hanging can take between 4 & 6 days to make, plus the time to process the palm leaf & the natural dyes.
