Description
This stunning Hong Kong skyline canvas wall art is titled Pearl of the Orient. Pearl of the Orient as it is translated from in mandarin. As a coast & a small island by the South China Sea, Hong Kong has enjoyed years of prosperity since the end of the opium war due to its cultural & economic boom through trade. It has the largest number of skyscrapers & one of the highest life expectancies in the world. It is no surprise why Hong Kong is regarded as the pearl of the far east. There was so much to see in Hong Kong. I was there only for a week & I wanted to photograph so many things. One thing I had in mind was a classic picture of Hong Kong so that I can remember it in my own way. I checked my Lonely Planet guidebook for Hong Kong & made a list of places to visit. I hit them all! But I wasn't happy with any of it. It was the second last day before I had to fly back to the UK from Hong Kong. I still didn't get what I feel was the shot. For the last couple of days, I thought I'd do some tourist stuff & visit all the classic tourist hotspots. It was late in the evening & we just had dinner. We walked around downtown to immerse ourselves in Hong Kong's nightlife for the one last time. The surrounding skyscrapers, the endless road traffic, & the neon light from the street stores that flood every corner of the city made me feel like we are indeed walking in a concrete jungle. Little did we realise that we have arrived at the funicular station for Victoria Peak. Feeling impromptu, we bought tickets & hopped on the funicular up to the top of the hill. The view was breathtaking! But it was so crowded with people literally filling every corner. I walked around to see if I could find a spot to take a few shots. I lingered on the viewing platform for about 20 minutes with no hope of finding a spot to take a shot without the crowd. As I was about to head back in, this couple next to me left & an empty spot was now available literally next to me. So I moved myself to the spot & started taking some pictures. As I looked through the viewfinder, I had this idea & knew exactly what I had to do in editing. What I did, in the end, was inspired by the movie Tron. Through an augmented classic view of Hong Kong from Victoria Peak, I wanted to present the city that never sleeps as I see it. Several landmarks can be identified in this photographic artwork, notably the International Commerce Centre, the Bank of China Tower with its dual antenna, & the Kowloon Bay.
