Chemical exfoliants use active ingredients such as PHA s or Glycolic Acid to boost skin surface cell renewal and help improve uneven skin texture/ tone and minimise pores, while physical exfoliants often contain abrasive small particles that work by scrubbing away dead skin cells. Think of PHA as AHA's little/gentler sister - it is a larger molecule, which makes it slower to penetrate the skin, this ultimately makes the exfoliating effect gentler.
