Description
'The Great Wave' by Katsushika Hokusai Bone China Espresso Cup & Saucer set is dishwasher-safe, however, to preserve the colours, hand washing is recommended. Hokusai is best known for his 'Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji' series of paintings. And it is from this series that his most famous painting: 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' originates. Katsushika Hokusai, born in 1760 in present-day Tokyo, began an apprenticeship as a block carver at the tender age of 15. He travelled through Japan, frequently changing teachers, his training path and even his name. In the almost ninety years of his lifetime, Hokusai painted under around thirty different pseudonyms, including Gakyojin, which can be translated as "mad about painting"". He's best known for his 'Thirty Six Views of Mount Fuji' series of prints. And it's from this series that his most famous painting: 'The Great Wave off Kanagawa' originates. While the Japanese regarded Hokusai's works more as ""utilitarian art"", in Europe his work contributed to Japonism, a movement that would inspire artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Paul Gauguin, Egon Schiele and Gustav Klimt, and influenced Art Nouveau."
