Description
Aconitum henryi 'Spark's Variety' produces almost navy-blue buds, held in racemes from July to September, on tall, rigid, leafy stems over attractive clumps of divided foliage. Each bud opens to reveal hooded, nectar-rich blooms in varying shades of dark, violet blue. Flowers are said to resemble the hoods worn by medieval monks, hence one of this intriguing plant's common names. Originating from mountains, meadowland and scrubland of Europe, North America and Asia, Aconitum were once been used in medicine as a pain-reliever. When cut, the stems give an unusual depth to cut flower arrangements within your home. Please note, as a precaution, wash your hands after cutting and whenever you handle these plants as all parts are toxic if ingested. Given the Award of Garden Merit for outstanding performance in the garden, Aconitum henryi 'Spark's Variety' prefers to be grown in moist, well-drained soil in full sun or partial shade, reaching a maximum height of approximately 1.5m, and spreading to 50cm. A fully hardy, herbaceous perennial with an RHS rating of H7, which dies back over winter, resprouting again in the spring.
