Add sumptuous Iris germanica, also known as Bearded Iris, to your hot summer borders - they are some of the earliest flowering perennials! ‘Miles Ahead’ has giant showy blooms, measuring 16 x 11cm, with generously ruffled petals. The standards are ivory white complemented by white falls bearing a broad border of mottled blue. Blue-green, sword-like foliage complete the look, providing interest and contrast with other perennials, long after the flowers have faded. Height: 90cm (35in). Spread: 30cm (12in). A sunny position in well-drained soil is ideal for growing iris. Bearded iris rhizomes prefer an open position where the rhizomes can bake in the summer sun, without being shaded by other plants. These perennials require a very free draining soil, so amend heavy clay soils with plenty of grit and well-rotted manure prior to planting. When planting iris, ensure that the rhizome sits just at the soil surface as they are prone to rot if planted too deeply.
