Description
The H-21 Shawnee helicopter is especially known for its nickname "the flying banana", which is derived from the peculiar upward angle of the rear hull. The fuselage unique in this novel way has been developed to accommodate the two powerful tandem rotors and the oversized propellers. Thanks to the two rotors and the strong aerodynamic structure, the H-21 has become an effective and reliable "workhorse", capable of successfully tackling the most demanding transport tasks in a variety of environments. Since the early 50s, it has been widely used by the US Army, but also during the Vietnam War it was used to transport troops and tactical auxiliary goods from 1961. The helicopter proved to be robust and reliable, even when the "Gunship" version was armed with cannons under the nose or in the side doors.
