The F-5, born from this precise necessity, was in fact a lightweight single-seater fighter, small in size but extremely maneuverable. Easy to produce and relatively cheap was characterized by high operational effectiveness. The first versions produced by Northrop, called F-5A "Freedom Fighter", were able, thanks to the two General Electric J85-GE-13 engines to reach the maximum speed of 1,700 Km/h. Armed with two 20mm guns. Installed on the muzzle, the F-5 was a real "multi-role" aircraft as it could have an offensive load for both air defense missions and ground attack missions. The mix of its characteristics guaranteed it a rapid spread and its use by numerous Air Forces.
