Tool marks, uneven edges, gaps and abrasions are deliberate treatments that emphasize the character of the furniture and give it a time-smashed look. The wood used in the production of farmhouse furniture is not glued, so the fronts, tops and sides do not form a uniform slab but retain the visible structure of the planks. Over time, gaps may appear, which will further emphasize the rustic character of the furniture.
