Really delightful 1940's original Ministry of Defence desk. It has three drawers to one side & a slide-out writing shelf. Also a lift-up flap at the other side for additional working space. Lovely iconic shape with panelling & grille detailing. Large wooden pull handles to the drawers & wooden foot rest. It stands solidly & the drawers run smoothly. There is some wear & areas of loss to the centre of the veneer on the top. However I have sanded & treated this with three coats of Danish Oil which will help preserve the condition & creates a wipe-clean surface. I have painted the base using Grand Illusions Noir chalkpaint with touches of Olive green. The paintwork is waxed & sealed with a slightly distressed finish. I left the rear foot rest in its natural oak as it has such a lovely tone & grain. I also painted inside the drawers to freshen them up, again using Olive, sealed with varnish to make them easy to clean. A really nice piece of furniture with lots of history - it has its official Royal Military Air Programme initials on the back. The desk measures 37 inches/94 cm wide when closed, 20 inches/51 cm deep & stands 28.5 inches/73 cm high. Fully extended it measures 48 inches/122cm wide.
