Description
Japanese katagami stencils at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston In 1910. the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston organized the first special exhibition of Japanese katagami selected from the museum's collection of 4,200 stencils, which were brought to Boston along with 1,000 traditional textiles and costumes by William Sturgeis Bigelow (1850-1926) after his trip to Japan between 1882 and 1888. Langdon Warner (1881-1955), the curator of the show, stated that stencils with their intricate and delicate patterns, while having been called tools for dyeing textiles are actually works of art themselves. Since then, the MFA has exhibited stencils for artists, designers, and all who love Japanese art.
