The QNAP QSW-M2108-2C Desktop 2.5G Smart Switch in the test The QNAP QSW-M2108-2C is a "desktop" switch. It is not designed to be placed in a server cabinet (it does not have a 19-inch mount), but rather the switch is designed to sit on your desk. Therefore, at 290 x 43 x 127 mm, it is fairly compact and the design is a bit more stylish. I don't want to call the switch "beautiful", but it does look a bit more impressive than a run-of-the-mill rack switch. QNAP uses a housing made of white plastic. What is striking is the large green power plug at the rear end, which is incorporated into the design. All connections of the QSW-M2108-2C are located on the front. Here we find 8x LAN ports. These 8 "primary" ports support 100/1000/2500 Mbit LAN. So each port can offer up to 2.5 Gbit. In addition to these 8 ports, there are two "uplink" ports. The switch is basically available in two versions, the QSW-M2108-2C version and the QSW-M2108 version. The former version has 2x RJ45 and 2x SFP+ ports, both with up to 10Gbit! The latter version lacks the SFP+ ports. This means the switch has 8x 2.5Gbit and 2x 10Gbit LAN. Great! Each of the LAN ports has a status LED, as is usual with switches. Number of ports: 10 10GbE SFP+/RJ45 composite port: 2 2.5GbE RJ45:8 Power supply: external power transformer Maximum power consumption: 36W user interface The QNAP QSW-M2108-2C has a WebUI, which means it can be controlled. You can access this user interface by entering the IP address in your web browser. The user interface is very well done! QNAP has done a very good job, especially visually. The UI looks pleasantly modern, clear, but functional. On the homepage we find a small overview of all the connected ports of the switch, its IP address and a current traffic diagram. So you can quickly see which port is currently sending how much data. On the feature side, we of course have the classics like VLANs, link aggregation, etc. But we also find advanced features like IGMP snooping or QoS.
