Description
The young, ambitious Roman officer Marcus Flavius Aquila (Anthony Higgins), is on a mission to discover the truth about his father’s legion, the Ninth Legion. Four thousand men disappeared without a trace while travelling to battle the rising Caledonian tribes in northern England. Disguising himself as a Greek doctor, and joined by his freed ex-slave, Esca (Christian Rodska), Marcus travels beyond Hadrian’s Wall to unravel the mystery surrounding his father’s last stand and find out what really happened to the Ninth Legion. The journey will be perilous, but Marcus is determined to find and bring back the bronze eagle standard that was a symbol of the Legion’s honour, the Eagle of the Ninth. The Eagle of the Ninth was first broadcast by BBC Scotland on the Sunday primetime drama slot in 1977, where it captivated audiences and was commended for being a faithful adaptation of Rosemary Sutcliff’s best-known novel. The series’ memorable and epic musical score was composed by Primetime Emmynominee Carl Davies (Cranford, The French Lieutenant’s Woman).
