Description
The I-58 was the final ship of the Otsu-class of submarines which served as the mainstay of the Japanese Navy's submarine force during the Pacific War. Captained by Commander Mochitsura Hashimoto, she served as a mothership for several kaiten manned torpedo missions. Just before the end of the war, she sortied from Kure in July 1945 and sank the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis near Palau on the night of July 30th. The Indianapolis was commissioned in November 1932 and participated in many actions as part of Admiral Spruance's 5th Fleet in November 1943. In July 1945, she left San Francisco on a secret mission to deliver components of the atomic bomb which would later be dropped on Hiroshima. She was returning to Leyte from this mission when she became the last major Allied warship to fall victim to Japanese submarine attack.
