For the score of Ben Affleck’s The Town (2010), Grammy and Golden Globe-winning composer Harry Gregson-Williams (Shrek, The Martian, The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe) teamed up with David Buckley to deliver a tense, but mesmerising soundtrack that reflects the brooding mood and rising intensity of the thriller. With Gone Baby Gone (2007) Ben Affleck already proved he’s just as comfortable being behind the camera as in front of it, but he’s aimed for an even bigger cast and plotline in crime drama The Town. The film was met with rave reviews and forms the perfect fusion between action and drama, relating the story of Doug MacRay (Affleck) in the crime-ridden area of Charlestown in Boston. Heading a four-man gang including his best friend Jem (Jeremy Renner), he robs banks until he meets and falls in love with Claire (Rebecca Hall), a bank manager the group took hostage after one of their heists and then released. Will Doug be able to pursue her and stay out of the hands of the FBI, or will Claire find out that he’s part of the crew that kidnapped her? Underlying the dark, anxious atmosphere the film evokes is Gregson-Williams and Buckley’s haunting score that consists of electronics mixed with live instruments and strings. The tracks that are heard in the action scenes, like ‘Bank Attack’, tend to build up slowly before changing dramatically into bolder, percussion-heavy instrumental pieces that are bursting with energy before elegantly slowing down again towards the end. However, just like the film itself, the score isn’t just about building up tension. Themes like ‘Doug Reflects’, ‘The Necklace’ and ‘The Letter’ give the score a more emotional, softer feel, which represents Doug’s pensive and sensitive side. Closing theme ‘The Letter’, played in the end scene of the film, is an emotional, piano-driven melody that is simple, but all the more beautiful for it. It’s these kinds of tracks that differentiate the score from most other action film soundtracks and demonstrate the lyricism of its composers. The score for “The Town” was already available on CD, but has never before been issued on vinyl. As part of our Secret Soundtrack subscription plan, Zavvi has now released 500 copies, each of which is individually numbered and stickered. Issued by Silva Screen Records, the record is a first pressing on 180g red splatter clear vinyl and can’t be missed by any film or music fan.
