Physalis alkekengi var. franchetii is better known by its culinary name of Cape Gooseberry and is loved for its delicious berries and ornate orange Chinese Lanterns. Tiny, creamy-white flowers appear in midsummer above oval green foliage. This hardy perennial is usually grown for its showy edible berries, which develop within red, papery Chinese Lantern calyces. These give a vibrant autumn display, bringing bright splashes of colour to fading perennial borders. If left on the plant, calyces will slowly skeletonize, adding ornate winter interest to your garden. Why not cut some stems for a wonderful decorative flower arrangements indoors?
