Chimonanthus praecox ‘Wintersweet’ is a well-known and popular variety for bringing fabulous winter interest to the garden. Masses of delicate yellow blooms emit an incredible, sweet fragrance that will fill the air in the middle of winter to early spring. This deciduous shrub has lush green foliage throughout the rest of the year, and growing to a height of up to 4m if left unpruned, it’s ideal for filling a large gap, screening a wall or fence or adding a bit more privacy to the garden. This elegant winter-flowering shrub is ideal for borders or for growing close to the house where its heavily perfumed flowers can be seen and enjoyed on even the dullest of winter days. The branches are also prized by flower arrangers for making spectacular winter bouquets. Although Wintersweet plants hardy, the young stems can be damaged by hard frosts, so choose a sheltered position to protect the plant. Prior to planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil.Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season until young plants become established. Prune Wintersweet shrubs in spring, immediately after flowering.
