Before planting, mix in plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the planting hole. Space the raspberry canes 60 cm (24 inches) apart in rows. Firm the soil around the plants and water thoroughly. Prune the canes to 30 cm (12 inches) immediately after planting to promote the growth of additional shoots. Autumn-fruiting varieties do not require support for their stems and can also thrive in large containers filled with soil-based compost, such as John Innes No. 3.
