Description
Hawthorn is a classic, natural and native hedging variety ideally suited to all UK gardens. Thriving in most conditions, it’s resilient and fully hardy. Tolerating harsh conditions, strong winds and salty air, it’s a particularly popular choice for growing in coastal gardens. Not only do it provide a dense, thorny hedge for that added security around boundaries, but Hawthorn is a magnet for wildlife too, with pretty white blossom in spring which attracts pollinators, followed by attractive red berries in autumn which are loved by wild birds. Supplied as 60 - 90 cm bareroots (24 - 35") Height: 8m (26'). Spread: 8m (26'). Planting distance: 30cm (12" ). (4 plants per metre for a single line hedge).Grow Hawthorn hedges on reliably moist but well drained soil. Plants will tolerate a wide range of soils, from sand to chalk and clay, and areas of pollution. Plant bare root hedging as soon as possible after delivery. Before planting, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure into the planting area. Dig a hole deep enough to fit the length of the roots and position one plant in each hole, then firm back down. For hedgerow planting, position the plants around 45cm apart. Water-in thoroughly after planting and keep well watered until established. In areas where rabbits can be a problem, it’s worthwhile to place rabbit guards on your plants. Clip your hedging plants regularly to encourage them to bush out.Hawthorn can be grown as a free-standing shrub or tree, or planted closely to form a thick hedge. Water regularly until established.
