Description
A remarkable achievement in British runner bean breeding, Runner Bean ‘Moonlight’ introduces predominantly self-setting plants, ensuring a bountiful harvest with ease. This variety boasts profuse white flowers and inherits the desirable traits of French beans, resulting in exceptionally smooth, fleshy, stringless pods reaching up to 25cm (10") in length, brimming with the classic taste of runner beans. Thanks to its vastly improved flower setting, ‘Moonlight’ guarantees earlier and continuous yields, even in adverse weather conditions. Standing tall at 3m (10’) with a spread of 30cm (12"), it promises a prolific harvest. Supplied as 1 x packet of 40 seeds.Companion planting: Pairing runner beans with sweet peas attracts pollinating insects to the flowers, while Nasturtiums draw aphids away from your crop.Sow runner bean seeds indoors from mid-April for later transplanting, or directly sow outdoors from late May to early July.Indoors, plant seeds 5cm (2") deep in 7.5cm (3") pots or trays of well-draining, seed-sowing compost. Keep them in a propagator or seal container inside a plastic bag at 18-20°C (64-68°F) until germination, which typically takes 7-10 days. Once germinated, grow the plants in cooler conditions until all frost risks have passed and they are large enough for transplanting outdoors. Gradually acclimate them to outdoor conditions over 7-10 days before planting in rich, fertile, well-drained soil, ideally in full sun or partial shade with protection from strong winds. Avoid freshly manured soil, as it promotes foliage growth over bean production.Alternatively, directly sow runner beans outdoors at a depth of 5cm (2") and spacing them 30cm (12") apart. Plant them in rows 1.5m (5') apart or train them onto a wigwam structure where space is limited. Support the plants with garden canes, strings, or netting at the time of planting.
