Description
Also commonly known as star jasmine, for its star shaped flower constellations, this really is a wonderful treat for the senses. This elegant evergreen climber bears thousands of pure white, star-shaped flowers throughout summer on twining woody stems. The glossy, rich evergreen foliage turns deep red and bronze in autumn, forming the perfect backdrop for its dramatic blooms which perfume the air with an irresistible, sweet fragrance. A stunning addition to any scented patio garden or grown against a sheltered wall for a truly glamorous display. Although Trachelospermum jasminoides is not of the Jasmine family, it is often confused as such for its common name of Star Jasmine, Confederate jasmine, Chinese jasmine. Plant in fertile, well drained soil in sun or semi-shade. Choose a sheltered position that is protected from cold winter winds. In particularly cold areas it is best grown in patio containers of loam based compost, such as John Innes No.2, that can be moved to a protected position over winter. Provide the twining stems with an appropriate support such as trellis, wires or a free standing climbing frame. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. After flowering, reduce the stems to restrict them to the available space. Caution: The milky sap is an irritant to skin and eyes.
