You would be forgiven for thinking that this brassica is a genetically engineered variety, with its extremely unusual spirals. However, romanesco has actually been around since the 16th century, predating both the broccoli and cauliflower. The spears can be snapped off and cooked just as you would broccoli, rich in antioxidants, fibre and vitamin c, a true nutritional power house.Sow seeds in a well raked, firm, seed bed in late spring in drills 10mm (½in) deep and keep moist. Sowing can also be made under glass at this time. Transplant the seedlings 45x45cm (18x18in) apart, when they have made 2-3 true leaves.
