So what makes these two AHAs so potent? Well, mandelic acid is the most gentle of all the alpha-hydroxy family (goodbye, irritation!) but still manages to exfoliate skin evenly and effectively, accelerating cell turnover and reducing fine lines, hyperpigmentation and breakouts in the process. Similarly, lactic acid is a superstar skin resurfacer. Like it’s co-star, lactic acid’s larger molecule size means it can only penetrate the top layer of skin — meaning it’s gentle (but effective) in sloughing away dead skin cells.
