Description
Grown as either a shrub or small tree, Albizia julibrissin 'Ombrella' is large and deciduous with a rounded habit. Dark green, fern-like leaves are divided into sickle-shaped leaflets, with round, fluffy, fragrant, pink flowers from mid-summer through to early autumn. Pot up silk tree plants and grow them on in a cool, light position until big enough to plant outside. Prior to transplanting, acclimatise them to outside conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days. Plant albizia in a sheltered position in any well drained soil in full sun. Prune silk trees in winter or early spring, reducing the stems to fit the available space, and removing any damaged, crossing or wayward branches entirely. Albizia may be successfully wall trained. During the first few years prune to achieve a permanent framework of stems. Thereafter the stems of wall trained albizia can be reduced annually to within 4 buds from the permanent framework.
