Description
Arundo donax 'Variegata' is a fantastic exotic looking grass, it produces masses of variegated foliage that forms in ribbon like leaves. A very impressive variety that is sure to draw the eye. Often grown for its dramatic foliage and its bamboo-like structure with the sturdy stems reaching up to 180cm tall with the foliage draping from them. Variegated forms of Arundo donax are less hardy than the species and require winter protection if intended for outdoor cultivation. Grow Giant reed plants in reliable moist, rich fertile soil. Choose a position in full sun with shelter from strong winds. Alternatively grow Arund plants in large containers in a frost free conservatory. Arundo requires a reliably moist soil. Water frequently, particularly during dry periods in summer. Cut back the tattered foliage in late autumn. Plants grown outdoors in all but the warmest parts of the UK, should be lifted and potted up in autumn. Store them in a frost free greenhouse until spring when all risk of frost has passed.
