Description
Awarded an RHS AGM for its garden performance, this compact, shrub has a low, spreading habit and requires very little maintenance. The frilly double blooms of Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Elsie Lee' make a flamboyant display in late May. This evergreen Azalea is popular for its large, lilac-mauve flowers which are somewhat unusual in Azaleas. An excellent specimen for cascading over low walls and rockeries or growing in a container on the patio. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds to grow Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Elsie Lee', soil should be moist, well drained, and preferably enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting, so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
