A strong-growing, dense, rounded, deciduous shrub of medium-size which produces extremely fragrant magnolia-like flowers with white strap-like petals in May, which continues to bloom intermittently throughout summer and into autumn. Acclimatise Calycanthus plants to outdoor conditions for a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Grow Calycanthus in borders, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in full sun. Water regularly until Carolina allspice plants are fully established. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, prune Calycanthus floridus in early spring as the buds begin to swell.
