Thompson & Morgan Clematis 'Michiko' is a perennial, hardy climber with a delightfully compact habit that will suit most gardens. Due to its neat size, this variety makes the perfect choice for growing in patio pots and containers. From April to May an abundance of starry white blooms appear. This free flowering climber is also an ideal choice for tumbling over low walls, rambling through established shrubs or even growing up an obelisk to create a striking feature in spring borders. Wherever you grow this beauty, it is sure to become a garden favourite. When planting Thompson & Morgan Clematis 'Michiko', plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile, well-drained soil, and choose a position in sun or semi-shade. Position the top of the rootball at a depth of 7.5cm (3") below soil level, to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry. Such soils can be improved by the addition of plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No.3. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame. Feed and water frequently throughout the growing season. This variety of clematis flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth. Pruning should be undertaken in summer, after flowering. When pruning group 1 Clematis, remove any damaged or dead stems entirely before cutting back the remaining stems to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the plant in order to protect the roots and conserve soil moisture.
