Description
Bushy stems filled with blooms from early summer to autumn, Clematis ‘Picardy’ is a particularly worthwhile cultivar with exquisite magenta blooms, each petal striped with red, making a bold statement in the garden! Free flowering and with a neat, compact habit, this hardy climber is perfect for growing in patio containers and also makes a fabulous display when planted in hanging baskets. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade when growing Clematis ‘Picardy’ and plant the climber deeply in moist, fertile well-drained soil, positioning the root ball at a depth of 7.5cm (3”) below soil level, in order to encourage new shoots to form from the base of the plant. Clematis dislike soils that are particularly wet or dry, however these soil conditions can be improved with the addition of plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost. When growing clematis in patio containers, use a good quality soil based compost. Train clematis plants onto a suitable support such as trellis, wires or a freestanding climbing frame. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season. Clematis ‘Picardy’ flowers in late summer on the current year’s growth. Pruning of Group 3 clematis should be undertaken in spring, before active growth begins, by cutting back all of the previous year’s stems to a pair of healthy buds at around 20cm (8”) above ground level. Apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost in spring, in order to conserve soil moisture and protect the roots.
