A pair of unusual & rare , antique, ceramic open salts in the shape of hands clasping a dish. These are Victorian & come as a pair, c.1840. For size they are heavy. Made from white ceramic with green & faded gilded accents. They were made to hold salt or condiments at the table, but could be used as decorative accents, small tealight candle holders or as trinket dishes today. I think they look great as votive holders. I would just be cautious to avoid getting sooty deposits onto the edges of the ceramic as it might be difficult or impossible to remove where the glazing ends. I found them at an antique fair in Essex, England. It seems the Victorians liked hands & I have found that usually hands used as ring holders or carved hands are still popular today. Think of those Victorian decoupage scraps, many of them depicted hands, hands across the miles & so on. Since I brought these into our house they have had a place on our mantle & did not look out of place there. The salt cellars are 4 1/2" long x 2 1/2" wide & 2 3/4" tall. The dish part is 2 3/8" x 1 1/2" in size. They will just hold tealight candles ! Generally they are in excellent condition for their age. There is a small, smooth chip to the edge of one, as shown. There is also some rubbing to the paint with some loss of colour. The once gilded rims & details now faintly twinkle with the remains of the painted decoration. Inscribed to the base 490 & one has a painted number or letters, difficult to read but could have been the decorator's identity. Weight of the pair unwrapped 727g.
