Lavender 'Hidcote' is a quintessential English lavender, and no summer garden should be without this traditional favourite. Dense, aromatic, silver-grey foliage is covered in deep violet, fragrant flower spikes each summer, which are highly attractive to bees. Ideal for the middle of borders, where it will form evergreen mounds. Hang bunches of cut flowers to dry and use to fragrance your home. Pot up plants using free draining compost and grow them on in frost free conditions until large enough to plant outside. Once they are well grown, acclimatise English lavender plants to outdoor conditions over 7 to 10 days before planting out on free draining soil in full sun. Lavender’s dislike wet ground, particularly during winter. Water regularly throughout summer until lavender plants are fully established. Once established, they are reasonably drought tolerant. Immediately after flowering, prune English lavender back to within 2cm (1") of the previous year's growth to maintain a compact, well-shaped plant. Culinary idea: Make delicious lavender sugar or lavender and mint jelly from the freshly picked flowers. Premium perennials are large plug tray plants, roughly the same size as garden ready plants like a potted plant without a pot. They will need to be acclimatised to the garden, and once all chance of frost has cleared can be planted out directly into the garden.
