Description
Acer palmatum Atropurpureum are small, slow growing deciduous trees that are known for their iconic deep purple-red foliage and architecture. They are compact and extremely slow growing making these extremely easy to maintain and for growing in small gardens and containers. The compact rounded habit that is seen by this variety allows a canopy of colour to form. The foliage also undergoes a transformation from spring to summer and into autumn. Foliage starts out purple-red with purple flowers, changing to a fiery shade of crimson in autumn. It then sheds its leaves in the winter months, only for it to come back with a vengeance in spring bursting with colour. This variety is perfect for growing as stand-alone specimen plants, however they can also be used to form Japanese themed borders or for planting under larger trees where sunlight may not always be able to reach. Grow in any moist, fertile, well drained soil in sun or dappled shade, with shelter from strong winds which can scorch the finely cut leaves. Alternatively plant in large containers or pots using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. Water regularly throughout the growing season until well established. Protect plants from strong winds. Acers require little pruning other than to maintain their shape. Lightly trim stems if necessary from late autumn to midwinter.
