Thompson & Morgan Azalea Mary Helen 3 Litre Potted Plant X 1
Description
Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Mary Helen' makes for a striking specimen shrub for acidic borders and shaded woodland gardens. One of the later flowering evergreen Azaleas, but well worth the wait. Large, pristine white flowers with dark contrasting anthers from early June. Broadly spreading branches are cloaked in glossy green foliage throughout the year, bringing colour to the garden even on dull winter days. When growing Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Mary Helen' choose a position in moist, well drained, acidicic soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface-rooting so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidicity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acidic-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
