Description
Not widely known, Calycanthus x raulstonii ‘Hartlage Wine’ is a rare but beautiful, multi-stemmed shrub with upright to arching branches, bearing lustrous green, oval leaves. The flowers are a rich shade of burgundy red, touched with a hint of cream in the centre, producing a light scent, flowering from late spring to early autumn. Acclimatise Calycanthus plants to outdoor conditions over a period of 7 to 10 days prior to planting in their final positions. Grow Calycanthus in borders, in moist, fertile, well-drained soil that is rich in organic matter. Choose a position in full sun. Water regularly until Carolina allspice plants are fully established. Feed and water regularly throughout the growing season while young plants become established. Once established, prune Calycanthus floridus in early spring as the buds begin to swell. Cut back all stems to a low permanent framework, 3 or 4 buds from the base of the plant. After pruning Caroline allspice, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or compost around the base of the plant.
