A very popular and versatile variety, the Lombardy Poplar is well known to be used by farmers as a windbreak, often seen in neat rows towering above the rest. They are also extremely popular with wildlife, providing a great home to nesting birds and many insects. The leaves will turn to a stunning variety of yellow shades before falling, and are distinctly triangular in shape.Prior to planting Poplar, incorporate plenty of well-rotted manure or garden compost into the soil. Plant at the same soil level as they were growing at the nursery, and water well to settle the soil.Water young plants during particularly dry periods until fully established. In spring, apply a mulch of well-rotted manure or garden compost to the base of the hedge.
