Description
Citrus trees are a favourite of the sun-loving Mediterranean plants. They can also be enjoyed back home too with some winter protection. The citrus fruits can take approximately a year to develop, but soon you’ll be able to savour the taste of home grown lemons high in vitamin C. Best used for juices, jams, chutneys or alternatively whole fruit can be frozen and used like an ice cube. The zest is a useful ingredient for cooking and baking. Equally the ellipsoidal yellow fruit looks very attractive so leave a few on for an ornamental plant display.Plant in a container or pot using a mix of ericaceous compost and neutral, soil based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Repot the plant at its original soil level and firm well into the new container. Water well and position somewhere well-lit and away from cold draughts and radiators (4-12°C) - in a conservatory is best. When all risk of frost has passed, plants can be positioned outside from May to October. Water freely in summer and mist leaves daily to increase humidity and discourage pests. Feed with citrus plant fertiliser every 2 weeks. Move plants back indoors before frosts. Reduce watering in winter but do not let the plant dry out completely.
