Forage for elderberries and elderflowers in your own garden with this fantastic native hedging choice. Not only does Elder have a multitude of culinary uses, but it’s fantastic for attracting wildlife to the garden too. Bees just love the nectar-rich flowers in spring, and then there’s an abundance of juicy berries in autumn to provide food for wild birds. An effective hedging variety, throughout most of the year it’s densely covered with foliage, providing an excellent screen and is perfectly happy to be regularly pruned to the shape and size required. This easy, reliable and fast growing hedging variety is perfectly suited to informal or wildlife gardens and will thrive just about anywhere. Supplied as 50 - 80cm bareroots. Planting Distance: 30cm (12") or 4 plants per metre for a single line hedge. Grow Sambucus in any moist but well drained soil in full sun or dappled shade, plants will also survive on poor, chalky soils. Elderberry require very little pruning except for general maintenance and shaping in winter. However, if they become too tall after a few years, they will also respond well to hard, restrictive pruning.
