Grow your own unusual potato substitute without the worry of potato blight! Oca ’Giggles’ is a deliciously different starchy tuber from the Andes, producing potato-like swollen roots with a lemony, nutty flavour. The great thing about Oca ‘Giggles’ is that it provides both starchy tubers and tangy edible leaves, known as ‘Peruvian Wood Sorrel’, which can be used in salads. Prepare the roots just like potatoes – mash, boil, roast and fry – or grate raw Oca tubers into salads. The tubers are sensational in soups and stews too. Oca 'Giggles' is a perennial grown as an annual in Northern hemispheres.Grow plugs on in cool but frost-free conditions and plant out when all danger of frost has passed. Plant out in late May allowing 90cm (36”) between each plant. Harvest tubers in late November when top growth has died but before the first heavy ground frosts as tubers will rot. Protect with fleece to extend the season as flavour improves the longer tubers are left.
