Rhododendron 'Mother's Day’ is a neat little shrub, perfectly sized for growing in patio containers or at the front of ericaceous borders. Plant it en masse to create a blaze of spring colour for an unforgettable display. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds to grow Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Mother's Day'. Ensure soil is moist, well drained and enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting, so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water Rhododendron plants regularly throughout the growing season. Where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed Rhododendrons in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
