Thompson & Morgan Skimmia japonica Rubella is a male clone bearing rosettes of glossy, aromatic leaves. The evergreen foliage is punctuated by red buds through the winter, with an explosion of potent, fragrant white blossoms appearing by spring. Grow Thompson & Morgan Skimmia japonica Rubella plants in a dappled or fully shaded position, in moderately fertile, rich, well-drained soil which can be neutral to acidic in pH. Avoid full sun as this can cause yellowing of the leaves. Alternatively, grow Skimmia in large containers, using a soil based compost such as John Innes No.3. mixed with ericaceous (acidic) compost. Skimmia plants will require very little pruning. After flowering, trim them lightly to keep a good shape, and remove any dead or damaged growth.
