Description
The cabbage Winter Jewel is one of the best winter and spring cabbages. They are slow to heart up but produce even sized, smooth dark green leaves up to 12 inches (30cm) long. The eventual compact heads can weigh up to 250g (8oz). This variety has superb hardiness, and has reliably proved outstanding for its quality, yield and length of harvest. Boasting excellent flavour and bolting resistance, ‘Winter Jewel’ matures to harvestable ‘greens’ approximately 60 days from transplanting and will remain in good cropping condition for many weeks. Harvest between January and April. Enjoy steamed and serve as a side or use its versatile, nutrient-packed leaves in all kinds of hearty recipes. This easy-to-grow and reliable variety also shows good resistance to bolting. Give them a try and you will not be disappointed!Water cabbages regularly particularly during dry periods. Feed throughout the growing season with a high nitrogen feed. Hoe between plants regularly to prevent weeds from establishing and bring insect larvae to the surface. Draw earth up around the base of each stem to prevent wind rock and improve the plants stability. Harvest Cabbage in late autumn and winter once the heads have matured.
