Description
Throughout May, the dense, glossy foliage off Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Betty Anne Voss' is superbly offset by its sugar pink, double blooms. A charming evergreen variety from the Azalea group, with dense foliage and a compact, spreading habit, this well-behaved shrub makes an excellent choice for acid borders, woodland edges and rockeries. When growing Thompson & Morgan Rhododendron 'Betty Anne Voss', choose a position in moist, well drained, acidic soil that has been enriched with plenty of well-rotted organic matter. Choose a position in semi or dappled shade with shelter from cold drying winds. Many dwarf Rhododendrons can cope with a sunny position provided that the soil remains reliably moist. Where soil conditions are alkaline, Rhododendron plants are best grown in patio containers, using a mix of ericaceous compost and a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. Rhododendrons are surface rooting, so it is important to avoid planting them too deeply. Water regularly throughout the growing season, and where possible, use rainwater as the lime contained in tap water will reduce the acidity in the soil over time. Feed in spring with a slow release fertiliser for acid-loving plants. Protect plants from cold winter winds. Border grown Rhododendrons will appreciate an autumn mulch to protect their shallow roots from winter cold. Take care not to mound the mulch too close to the stem as this may cause it to rot. If necessary, lightly prune Rhododendron plants in June to remove damaged shoots and restrict size.
