Description
An amazing addition to any veg plot, Chinese Artichokes (also known as ‘Crosnes’ in French cuisine, where they are very popular) are unusual and prolific, as well as low maintenance. These perennials will produce 20-30 tubers, which are crunchy with a distinct nutty flavour, and are ready to harvest from November all the way through to March. They make for a lovely addition to salads or in place of water chestnuts in stir fries to add a crunch!Plant in rows about 30cm apart in a sunny position with moist, well-drained soil which has been amended with plenty of organic matter. Protect young plants against slug damage. Water well during dry periods. Weed regularly to avoid competition but take care not to damage the tubers. Remove any flower spikes to concentrate energy into tuber production. Harvest from late October as and when you need them.
