Description
Clematis ‘Early Sensation’ certainly lives up to its name, flowering between April and May to create an early display in your garden. The fragrant white flowers have attractive yellow-green stamens and are followed by eye-catching fluffy seed heads which add further interest and prolong the garden display. The evergreen foliage is held above non-clinging stems and is bronze when immature before turning to dark green. This Old Man’s Beard variety is compact and well-suited to growing among mature shrubs. Alternatively, you can train it on to an obelisk in a large patio container for a spectacular start to the growing season. Choose a position in sun or semi-shade for your clematis and plant deeply in fertile, well-drained yet moist soil. The top of the root ball should be placed at a depth of 7.5cm (3”) below the soil level to encourage new shoots to be produced from the base of the plant. If growing Clematis in patio containers, use a soil-based compost such as John Innes No. 3. You should regularly feed and water your Clematis plants throughout the growing season. This variety flowers in early spring on the previous year’s growth, so you should prune in summer, after flowering. Clematis ‘Early Sensation’ is in pruning group one; completely remove any damaged or dead stems before cutting back those that remain to a pair of healthy buds to maintain the plant within its allotted space.
